About these numbers: Power and toughness are printed card stats from the official Gatherer database, not a combat simulation. First strike, trample and flying decide real fights, so this page compares printed power only, with toughness quoted per row.

About this converter

Magic numbers its monsters in two stats and the first one frames every trade. Alpha set the curve that never left: 2 mana buys Grizzly Bears at 2/2, 4 mana buys Hill Giant at 3/3, 5 mana buys Serra Angel at 4/4 and 6 mana buys Mahamoti Djinn at 5/6 or Shivan Dragon at 5/5. Mana birds start at zero with Birds of Paradise at 0/1 while Llanowar Elves, Drudge Skeletons and Prodigal Sorcerer share 1 power. The top end climbs through Craw Wurm at 6, Force of Nature at 8 and Colossus of Sardia at 9. Every value here is the printed power from Gatherer, the same numbers on the cardboard.

How to use it

Pick two creatures and a unit in the top row. The three boxes below stay linked: one holds a count of the first, one the matching count of the second, one the total in power. Change any box and the other two update. Try 1 Colossus against Grizzly Bears.

Tarmogoyf is left out because its printed power is a variable star, not a number, so no fixed comparison exists. Prodigal Sorcerer shows why power misleads: 1 power with an ability worth many times that. Toughness rides along in notes for context but the converter runs on power only.

FAQ

What is Shivan Dragon's power?

5 power and 5 toughness, per Gatherer. Its firebreathing pumps it higher in play.

What is Serra Angel's power?

4 power and 4 toughness with flying and vigilance. The classic midrange benchmark.

What is the strongest card on this list?

Colossus of Sardia at 9 power and 9 toughness, ahead of Force of Nature at 8.

Why is Tarmogoyf missing?

Its printed power is a variable star that counts card types in graveyards, so no fixed number exists to compare.
