About these numbers: Rates are base Gen I Red and Blue values at full HP with a standard Poke Ball. Status, HP loss and better balls raise real odds through the Gen I formula and are noted instead of rowed as separate numbers.

About this converter

Red and Blue store one catch number per species from 0 to 255. Commons sit at top: caterpie 255, pidgey 255, weedle 255. Mid rates step down through pikachu 190, raticate 127, metapod 120, pidgeotto 120, fearow 90, sandslash 90, raichu 75. Starters and most evolved forms share 45: bulbasaur 45, gyarados 45, eevee 45, mew 45. Rare rows finish low with ditto 35, snorlax 25, articuno 3 and mewtwo 3. That makes mewtwo about 85 times harder to start than caterpie before balls and status. Every value here is the Red base rate.

How to use it

Pick two Pokemon and a unit in the top row. The three boxes below stay linked. Change any box and the other two update. One box holds a count of the first, one holds the matching count of the second, one holds the total in catch rate. Try 1 Mewtwo against Caterpies.

Yellow differs in four rows and stays out of math: partner pikachu 163 instead of 190, kadabra 96 instead of 100, dragonair 27 instead of 45, dragonite 9 instead of 45. Later games change many rows, for example mewtwo to 20 in Legends Z-A, so the table pins Red and Blue only. Real catch chance also needs HP, ball and status through the Gen I formula, which sources list with these bases.
