About this converter

Pathfinder First Edition gives every race a base land speed in feet per round. Medium races move 30 feet: human, elf, half-elf, half-orc, aasimar, tiefling, goblin, hobgoblin, kobold, orc and tengu. Small and stocky races move 20 feet: dwarf, halfling, gnome, ratfolk, duergar and svirfneblin. Dwarves keep full speed in armor and under loads, which the note records. A 5 foot square equals one grid square, so 30 feet is six squares and 20 feet is four. Every value here is the Paizo PRD First Edition figure.

How to use it

Pick two ancestries and a unit in the top row. The three boxes below stay linked. Change any box and the other two update. One box holds a count of the first ancestry move, one holds the matching count of the second, one holds the distance in feet, squares or meters. Try 1 human move against dwarf moves to see the 30 against 20 gap.

Speeds come from the Pathfinder PRD Core Rulebook races page and the Advanced Race Guide. Goblins move 30 despite small size, noted as the exception. Second Edition changed several values, for example humans to 25, so this table pins First Edition and notes the change. Difficult terrain halves movement unless noted.

FAQ

What is the standard speed?

30 feet for most medium races, 20 feet for dwarf, halfling, gnome, ratfolk and deep races.

Any speed surprises?

Goblins and kobolds move 30 feet despite small size. Dwarves keep 20 feet even loaded.

How fast are dwarves?

20 feet, but armor and encumbrance never slow them. Slow and steady wins.

Did Second Edition change speeds?

Yes. Humans drop to 25 feet there. This table pins First Edition values throughout.
