About this converter
The National Hurricane Center tracks maximum sustained winds for every Atlantic storm in HURDAT2, and reanalysis sets the official peaks. Hurricane Allen reached 190 mph in 1980, the basin record. Four storms share 185: the 1935 Labor Day hurricane, Gilbert, Wilma and Dorian. This table keeps ten Category 5 peaks with year and landfall notes, as published by NOAA.
How to use it
Pick two entries and a unit in the top row. The three boxes below stay linked. Change any box and the other two update. Try Katrina against Allen to feel the 15 mph gap. Switch to knots or kmh for marine and metric readings.
Winds are one minute maximum sustained values at peak strength, not gusts and not landfall readings. Reanalysis has shifted some peaks over the years, and this table uses current HURDAT2 numbers. Pressure minima tell a different story and sit outside this table. Pacific typhoons are left out. Allen at 190 mph tops the basin record. Four storms share 185 with Katrina and Andrew tied lowest at 175. Gusts run higher.
FAQ
Which Atlantic hurricane had the strongest winds?
Hurricane Allen at 190 mph in 1980. Four storms share second at 185.
Are these landfall wind speeds?
No. These are peak strength values. Katrina made landfall weaker than its 175 mph peak.
Do these numbers include gusts?
No. Gusts run higher than sustained winds, so this table keeps one minute sustained values only.
Why are Pacific typhoons missing?
Because HURDAT2 covers the Atlantic basin only. Pacific typhoon peaks sit in a separate table.
