About these numbers: Prices are fixed 1997 game data. Square never set a gil to dollar rate, so this page compares gil prices against each other and offers no USD conversion rather than inventing one. Remake prices differ and are noted where relevant.

About this converter

Midgar runs on fixed prices, which makes it perfect for comparison. A Potion costs 50 gil, a Phoenix Down 300, a Tent 500 and an Ether 1,500. That means one Ether equals 30 Potions or 5 Phoenix Downs, no exchange rate needed. Materia sits mid range with Fire, Ice and Lightning at 600 each and Restore at 750, while armor climbs from the Iron Bangle at 160 to the Titan Bangle at 280. Every figure here is the original 1997 shop value from Sector 7 and Sector 5 stores. Sell prices run at half of buy prices across the board, so the buy figures anchor the table.

How to use it

Pick two prices and a unit in the top row. The three boxes below stay linked: one holds a count of the first price, one the matching count of the second, one the total in gil. Change any box and the other two update. Try 1 Ether against Potions.

The 2020 Remake repriced several goods, for example Hi-Potion at 100 gil and Iron Bangle at 1,000, so Remake figures stay out of this 1997 table. Battle loot and steal drops ignore shop prices entirely.
