About this converter

The Shanghai Maglev runs at 431 km/h, a full 81 faster than the next steel wheel service. China Railway Fuxing sets the steel wheel mark at 350 on Beijing to Shanghai. France and Japan tie at 320 with TGV Duplex on LGV Est and E5 Hayabusa on Tohoku. Spain follows at 310, Korea at 305, then a group at 300: Italy, Eurostar, Germany, Taiwan and Italo. JR Central N700S closes the table at 285 on Tokaido. Test records run far higher, with TGV at 574.8, but this page uses timetabled commercial speeds only.

How to use it

Pick two trains and a unit in the top row. The three boxes below stay linked. Change any box and the other two update. Try Maglev against Fuxing to see the 81 km/h gap. The bars below scale to the Maglev so the 285 to 310 group looks close together. Switch the unit to mph for US figures. Ratios are exact divisions of the listed top speeds.

Commercial speed means the fastest timetabled run, not a test sprint. Maglev sources differ: Wikipedia gives 431 while CNN gives 460. We use 431 as the timetabled figure and note 460. CR450 test runs hit 453 in 2025 with a planned 400 service, but it was not in service at the time of writing so it is left out. ICE 3 reaches 320 in France but 300 on German lines, so 300 is listed.
