About these numbers: Challenge ratings and XP are the official 5e System Reference Document figures. CR measures encounter budget for an average party, not a physics unit, and a clever party beats above its weight. This page compares the printed budget numbers only.

About this converter

D&D prices its monsters in experience points and the menu runs from snacks to apocalypse. A Commoner pays 10 XP, a Giant Rat 25, goblins, skeletons and zombies 50 each and an orc 100. An ogre at 450 equals nine goblins, an owlbear at 700 equals fourteen, and a troll at 1,800 equals thirty six. Dragons reset the scale: Young Red at 5,900, Adult Red at 18,000 and Ancient Red at 62,000. The Beholder at 10,000 and the lich at 33,000 guard the high tiers before the Tarrasque closes the book at 155,000, fifteen Beholders in one shell. Every value here is the printed 5e SRD figure for the listed challenge rating.

How to use it

Pick two monsters and a unit in the top row. The three boxes below stay linked: one holds a count of the first, one the matching count of the second, one the total in XP. Change any box and the other two update. Try 1 Tarrasque against goblins.

Fractions are the whole game at low levels: CR 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 exist because first level parties count every 25 XP. Legendary resistance and lair actions are priced into dragon and lich ratings already. Homebrew and older edition stats stay out of this 5e table.

FAQ

How much XP is a goblin worth?

50 XP at CR 1/4, same as a skeleton or zombie.

How much XP is a Beholder worth?

10,000 XP at CR 13. Two hundred goblins.

How much XP is the Tarrasque worth?

155,000 XP at CR 30, the highest printed rating. About fifteen Beholders.

Does CR equal real monster strength?

No. CR is an encounter budget for an average four person party. Tactics, terrain and magic items swing real fights either way.
