About this converter
Super Mario Bros for the NES scores every action with fixed points. The 1985 instruction manual prints the core table on pages 12 to 14: Goomba 100, Koopa Troopa 100, Buzzy Beetle 100 and Koopa Paratroopa 400. Coins pay 200, bricks pay 50 when broken, and every power-up pays 1000. That makes one power-up equal ten Goombas or five coins. Hammer Bros pay 1000, Lakitu pays 800 on a stomp, and Bowser pays 5000 with fireballs only. The flagpole pays 100, 400, 800, 2000 or 5000 by height, so a bottom touch equals one Goomba and a top touch equals one Bowser.
How to use it
Pick two scores and the unit in the top row. The three boxes below stay linked. Change any box and the other two update. One box holds a count of the first entry, one holds the matching count of the second, one holds the total in points. Try 1 Bowser against Goombas, then switch to 1 flagpole top against coins. Shell and stomp chains climb past single hits, so use the 8000 row to test long combos.
Piranha Plants, Bloopers, Spiny, Bullet Bills and Cheep Cheeps pay 200, mostly by fireball since many cannot be stomped. Koopa Troopas pay 200 by fireball instead of 100. Lakitu drops to 200 by fireball. Buzzy Beetles ignore fireballs. Spiny and Spiny Eggs pay 100 when hit from below. Podoboo gives no points and stays out of the table. Castle levels give no time bonus in the NES original. Fireworks pay 500 each when the timer ends in 1, 3 or 6.
