About these numbers: Tolkien gives exact figures for the Free Peoples and vague ones for Mordor, often saying no tale told the full count. Exact book numbers are quoted; enemy totals use Karen Wynn Fonstad's Atlas minimums and are labeled as such. Film crowd sizes are far larger and are not used here.

About this converter

Tolkien counted his heroes and left his villains vague on purpose. The Rohirrim ride with exactly six thousand, the southern fiefs total less than three thousand full told, and the Host of the West sets out seven thousand strong but reaches the Gate with less than six. Mordor gets no such precision: the book says only that no tale told its full count, and that at the Morannon the enemy outnumbered the West ten times and more. This page keeps that split honest. Hard book figures stand as printed, while the 45,000 minimum at Pelennor and the 60,000 at the Gate come from Fonstad's Atlas and are labeled as estimates in every row.

How to use it

Pick two hosts and a unit in the top row. The three boxes below stay linked: one holds a count of the first host, one the matching count of the second, one the headcount in soldiers or thousands. Change any box and the other two update. Try 1 Mordor host against Rohirrim.

Hosts that cannot be counted are left out: the Army of the Dead, the Ents, the eagles and the goblin masses at the Five Armies get no figures in the books. The films show far bigger crowds, including over 200,000 orcs at Pelennor, which is a film invention and not used here.

FAQ

How many Rohirrim rode to Gondor?

6,000 riders, counted by Ghân-buri-Ghân and confirmed in the text. Théoden promised at least six thousand and brought exactly that.

How big was Mordor's army at Pelennor Fields?

Tolkien never gives a total. The standard scholarly minimum from Fonstad's Atlas is 45,000: about 20,000 from Mordor, 18,000 Haradrim and 7,000 Easterlings and Variags.

How many fought at Helm's Deep?

About 1,000 defenders fit to fight, against at least 10,000 of Saruman's troops, until Erkenbrand arrived with 1,000 more.

How many marched on the Black Gate?

7,000 set out from Minas Tirith, but detachments left less than 6,000 to face over 60,000 at the Morannon.
