About this converter

Ceres spans 939.4 km mean diameter, almost double Vesta at 525.4. Pallas at 511 and Hygiea at 433 follow. Interamnia at 326, Europa at 315 and Davida at 310 cluster near 320. Eunomia at 270, Sylvia at 260 and Juno at 250 close the table. Diameters here are geometric means from VLT imaging 2019 to 2021, since rock piles are not spheres. Ceres axes run 964 by 964 by 892 per NASA PDS. Vesta axes run 573 by 557 by 446. Ceres alone holds about 39 percent of belt mass.

How to use it

Pick two asteroids and a unit in the top row. The three boxes below stay linked. Change any box and the other two update. Try Ceres against Vesta to see the near double gap. The bars below scale to Ceres so Juno looks thin next to it. Switch the unit to miles for US figures. Ratios are exact divisions of the mean diameters.

Shapes drive gaps. Means average three axes, so single axis figures differ. NASA lists Ceres near 950 in outreach and 939.4 mean in tables. Vesta is called 530 in outreach and 525.4 mean in tables. We list means as primary with axes noted. VLT 2019 to 2021 revised Interamnia, Europa, Davida, Eunomia, Sylvia and Juno down from older IRAS totals. Mass order differs slightly from size order.

FAQ

What is the largest asteroid?

Ceres at 939.4 km mean. It is also a dwarf planet, visited by Dawn in 2015.

How big is Vesta?

525.4 km mean. Axes run 573 by 557 by 446. Dawn orbited it in 2011.

Why do diameters differ between sources?

Irregular shapes. Means average three axes. VLT imaging revised many totals down from IRAS.

Is Ceres a planet?

A dwarf planet since 2006. It keeps its first asteroid number and its belt lead.
