About this converter
Every gem in Dwarf Fortress multiplies a base form value by its material multiplier. Rough gems use base 6 and cut gems use base 20, so the multiplier sets trade price. This table ranks 14 Bay 12 Games gem multipliers on one scale, from green glass and banded agate at x2 to clear diamond at x60. Cheap glass and agates cover early crafts. Mid gems like amethyst at x20 and black opal at x30 cover decorations. Precious ruby, sapphire and emerald at x40 fund caravans, and rare diamonds at x60 sit at the top.
How to use it
Pick two gems and the unit in the top row, for example clear diamond and banded agate. The three boxes below stay linked, so editing any number updates the other two. One box holds counts of the first gem, one holds counts of the second, one holds total material value. Try 1 clear diamond against agates to see the 30 times gap.
Glass counts as synthetic gems and follows the same math. Green glass rates x2, clear glass x5 and crystal glass x10. Ornamental opals split across x2 and x10, with amber opal at x10. Semi-precious stones run x15 to x30, and this table rows amethyst at x20, clear zircon at x25 and black opal at x30. Precious stones all rate x40. Rare diamonds, star ruby and star sapphire all rate x60. Faint yellow diamond at x40 can hold single rare diamonds, which explains the price jump.
FAQ
What is the most valuable gem in Dwarf Fortress?
Clear diamond at x60, with blue, green, red, black and yellow diamonds tied at x60. Star ruby and star sapphire also rate x60. Faint yellow diamond at x40 holds those singles.
Is manufactured glass worth cutting?
Green glass at x2 is the cheapest, tied with banded agate and bloodstone at x2. Clear glass at x5 and crystal glass at x10 cost more because they need pearlash and furnace fuel.
How do gem tiers map to values?
Ornamental runs x2 to x10, semi-precious runs x15 to x30, precious runs x40 and rare runs x60. Amber opal at x10 tops ornamental. Amethyst at x20 starts semi-precious. Emerald at x40 starts precious.
How is gem value calculated?
Rough gems use base 6 times the multiplier and cut gems use base 20 times the multiplier. A rough green zircon at x20 is worth 120 and a cut one is worth 400. Encrust decorations use base 20 times the multiplier.
