About this converter
FIDE and chess historians record every world championship reign length, and the spread runs from one year to twenty seven. Emanuel Lasker held the title 27 years from 1894 to 1921. Mikhail Tal held it 1 year. Reigns count the span between winning and losing the title match, so tournament gaps never stretch them. Twelve champions sample every era from Steinitz to Carlsen.
How to use it
Pick two entries and a unit in the top row. The three boxes below stay linked. Change any box and the other two update. Try Lasker against Tal to feel the longest versus the briefest reigns. Years count completed reign length per champion tables.
Reign lengths follow official FIDE lineage from Steinitz 1886 onward. Botvinnik split reign across two losses, combined here with the split flagged. Interim and disputed titles sit outside the classical line. Twelve rows sample the longest and most famous reigns. Pre war reigns run longest, since title matches waited on funding. Post war FIDE cycles shortened every reign. Carlsen ended his own line by declining to defend, a first for a reigning champion.
